The soul of ZBIOS®


Our main goal with ZBIOS is to provide a BIOS specially designed for embedded applications. The most important feature for an embedded application is to be up and running as soon as possible from power on.

As BIOS performance has a big impact on how soon the application can be up and running, we have optimized everything from the power on self test to disk I/O, yielding the shortest total start up time in the industri.

ZBIOS®

ZBIOS is an embedded system BIOS and manages hardware automatically instead of depending on user interaction through setup menus. This makes more sense for embedded systems since many boards lacks support for a keyboard and display.

ZBIOS has also been optimized for high performance, yielding the shortest possible boot time, a most needed feature for many embedded applications.

Disk I/O optimizations

ZBIOS excels in disk I/O which dramatically decreases the time spent booting an OS. As an example, our floppy disk emulator used for CD-ROM/DVD booting reads data more than 53 times faster on a 133MHz 486-based board when compared to a 1.5GHz Athlon XP with a standard BIOS.

ZBIOS also supports reading, writing and verifying of up to 255 sectors in one BIOS call on any media, a feature not supported by any competitors at this time. A boot loader taking advantage of this feature will further reduce the time spent booting.

ZBIOS supports the following features:

  • Up to 2 IDE-channels (supporting up to 4 devices totally)
  • Up to 2 floppy drives (360KB, 720KB, 1.2MB, 1.44MB, 2.88MB)
  • Emulation of floppy drive in flash memory (same sizes as above)
  • Emulation of hard drive in flash memory
  • Emulation of floppy drive on CD-ROM (El Torito CD-ROM boot standard)
  • Emulation of hard drive on CD-ROM (El Torito CD-ROM boot standard)
  • VGA graphics on ISA- or PCI-bus
  • Monochrome graphics on ISA-bus
  • Keyboard and/or screen emulation on a VT100-compatible terminal
  • Keyboard and mouse (PS2 and USB)

Boot options

ZBIOS support the following boot devices:

  • Flash memory (emulated floppy drive or hard drive)
  • CD-ROM (emulated floppy drive, hard drive or direct start without drive emulation)
  • Floppy drive (360K, 720K, 1.2M, 1.44M, 2.88M)
  • Hard drive (LBA and CHS translation)
  • Expansion ROM


Custom boot devices can be added on request.
