What's the point of using a 1 Gb ethernet interface if your OS can't keep up with a 100 Mb interface?

Is there any reason to go for a 66 MHz PCI bus if your OS can't keep up with a 33 MHz bus?

As hardware performance increases over the years, operating systems and software performance actually decreases, filling up all the bandwidth in the processor.

Even though we get faster and faster processors, they are not fast enough to let most operating systems keep up with the full bandwidth of hardware interfaces.
